Google’s mobile friendly rankings and what it means for you

On 21st April, Google put forth a new ranking signal for search – that of a website’s ‘mobile friendliness’. Worldwide, consumers’ adoption of everything mobile has only been increasing. And with a bid to address the growing percentage of mobile users on search, Google has formally adopted it as one of its new ranking signals.

What does mobile-friendly mean?
Mobile-friendly/optimized sites render properly on mobile devices – ensuring that the user gets to access and interact with it optimally. If you’re not sure whether your site is optimized for mobile, you can use Google’s Mobile Friendly Test to check.

If your site is mobile-friendly – great! Run a usability test and see if you can enhance the experience.

My site is not mobile-friendly! What do I do now?
Start working on making your site mobile-friendly. Here are a few tips:

  • Incorporate responsive designs for your user interface
  • Using such a design approach will help optimize your website for desktop, tablet or mobile seamlessly
  • Simplify your site’s navigation to make it easier for users to get around
  • Optimize media to ease load times
  • If your site has a lot of features and functionality (like an eCommerce storefront), you could consider creating a separate mobile version
